This is going to give a little insight into me and why I create the work I do. This is going to be like a sort of questionnaire but please if I do not answer something here please feel free to leave a comment and I will do my best to get back to you.

How did you become involved in photography?

I have always been interested in interesting photographs particularly or the human body. It is one of the most interesting subjects to look at as no two are the same and have their own unique look. I decided after spending time looking at such images I wanted to try and create some.

I went out and bought a camera just a very basic point and shoot and it spiraled from there.

Why fetish / bondage / BDSM?

This is an interesting question yet a very simple one to answer. I have always had an interest in anything considered out of the normal or kinky. What better to shoot that something you enjoy?

I think that work is always better if the artist truly enjoys the subject matter.

How do people react to your work?

I get a mixture of comments from people that view my work, everything from praise to total disgust. It does not matter what the comments are as it means the person has taken the time to view my work regardless if they love or hate it.

Total Disgust? Are these types of comments common?

Part of the love I have with shooting taboo subjects is pushing the limits just to see what I can get away with. If someone is disgusted it means I have pushed that person’s limit.

What is your favorite thing to shoot?

I really love bondage and to incorporate creative rope work into my photographs. This is something I have an interest in away from photography so it’s only natural it will be included in my work.

What are you plans for your work?

I am going to continue to push the limits of taboo. Try find that line that shouldn’t be crossed and break through it. Watch this space for lots of interesting and perhaps shocking results.

As a fetish photographer I am often asked do I feel my work is to extreme to be published, but what exactly is extreme? The dictionary gives the following explanation;

of a character or kind farthest removed from the ordinary or average

This raises questions of its own what is the ordinary? I feel this is subjective depending on who you ask to me what I do is normal and part of an ordinary life but to others it could be seen to be twisted and extreme.

My work has always been away for me to push limits and boundaries just to see exactly what I can get away with. This has caused me to have some very positive comments as well as the negative. I can recall a number of times I have been emailed after posting some of my more taboo work advising that I need professional help. I firmly believe in freedom of expression provided that it falls within the law.
If you are considering shooting fetish content you have to be prepared for personal attacks on your state of mind. Do not let these get you down as you will also receive many positive comments.

Fetish is becoming more mainstream and this is helping those who have an interest but never acted on it to do so. Without this shift of what is considered ordinary we would not longer have new boundaries to push.

When I first took an interest in photography there was not really such a thing as social networking the extent of it was Faceparty. At that time finding new and interesting models was limited to modeling websites which was not ideal I like to shoot new faces.

Social networking has dramatically increased the number of models that are available for my work both new faces and established models. The creation of Facebook, Bebo, Twitter and MySpace has made networking a very quick and efficient process. This blog is also a source of networking used to expand my contacts.

I have looked into quite extensively the most effective ways to use such a medium of communication and the benefit comes from good integration of Social media sites and your own website. You need to give your contact new and interesting information. As a photographer I find that new photographs are the best medium. This in turn increases your followers and your network.

Social Networking is all about contacts and moving people from online screen name to the studio. This is done via the communication methods available on each social site such as private message. During these private message conversations don’t be afraid to drive your contacts to your website or your twitter as this will increase your visibility to the world and in turn your business.

Once you have the contacts and have a following it does not stop there. You need to give them something to keep the attention and engagement. This could be as simple as a weekly blog update or a post on Twitter directing to an interesting article. The more touch points you have with potential clients the better. When that wedding comes around or they need a portrait they will remember that they have seen 10 or 20 of your images over the last year and a few blogs. That could turn into a booking for you.

As always I will end with a few images.

I always find it really difficult to remember to update blogs or perhaps it is not being able to find the time? Either way I will apologize in advance if I go for weeks with no updates.

To start with an introduction is in order. I am Dave Burrell a fetish and alternative photographer from Glasgow. In addition to this I also shoot a range of other styles from portraits to images of a more adult nature but my passion is for fetish.

More recently I have moved into my own studio in Glasgow’s east end which allows me to shoot when its suits both me and the model without the worry of booking some studio space.

This blog will serve as a way of showing off what I have been up to and hopefully giving hints and tips on creating your own stunning fetish imagery.
